The
Annunciation
The design for my annunciation painting was extracted from the corresponding section of the pattern. Details and ornamentation are added, and the composition is slightly rearranged to create a work which functions as a stand-alone piece.
While researching other versions of the annunciation, I found a motif which I wanted to include - the needle and thread. This is a motif which rarely features in depictions of the annunciation after the twelfth century (often omitted in favour of a book). I tend to find the needle and thread more appealing - it was also a useful way to add a more decorative element to some of the spaces in the design. The needle and thread is said to represent the weaving together of humanity and divinity. Two angel Gabriels are shown to create symmetry, and emphasize how overwhelming this apparation would have been for Mary. As in the castle’s tapestry, lilies are shown, with the angel Gabriel holding the flower which represents the purity of the virgin Mary
